2012 is the year.

It’s your year. The year you get better acquainted with Tequila AND Mezcal. Don’t be afraid of either. Both are crafted to the finest standards, some are aged, some are not, but both can be extremely enjoyable either as a cocktail, or the way I like it, neat in a nice snifter!!

First, we purchased a barrel of Herradura Reposado Tequila, which is the reason for our trip in the first place.  We fly into Guadalajara and from there we venture out into the countryside for the Blue Agave fields!!  I will take a lot of photographs and I’ll post them right here after we return.

My pics will be a bit more exciting, I’m sure. We won’t receive our barrel, or our tequila for a few months, but you’ll hear all about it when we get it in.

We, unfortunately, don’t get to ride the Tequila Express!  That is a Saturday only deal and we just won’t be able to fit it into our schedule.

That was no rumor.  5 am came pretty early, but I was ready. I swear I heard someone knock on my door…I think I did, anyway, so I got up and looked out the window…it’s still dark, but there is enough light to see that all the young guys are getting their boards ready and about to hit the surf.  I woke Mitch up and said that it’s time!!  In minutes we were getting our boards and heading into the water.

Now, at this point, I have to say that I have played golf all my life. I’ve played in golf tournaments since I was in elementary school right up through college and division 1 conference championships. I think that I’m trying to say that I’ve been around a lot of golf clubs, you know the one your dad is a member, or where you play tournaments and more recently, where silly events for fundraising or corporate events are held.  You know the place–you show up and some dude gets your golf clubs out of your car.  When you’re finished, same dudes are cleaning your clubs and putting them back in your car.  I had ZERO expectations upon arrival at Casa de Mar.  This place is a surfer’s paradise.  Omar and Daniel unwaxed and re-waxed my board before I went out the first time. When you come out of the water, they take your board and someone else hands you a towel and a liter of water.  It is amazing.

So it’s just after 5 am, we are all wandering around and drinking coffee, getting morning business out of the way–sunscreen, some fresh fruit…  Omar and Daniel are waxing everyone’s board, getting ready for us to head out in the water.  The waves are insane…   Head-high to several feet over-head and and reeling.  I’m scared shitless.  Yet, I paddle out.  It’s a LONG paddle to get out there.  So long that I’m practically spent by the time I make it to the line-up…  It’s also crowded, all the things that make a rookie or KOOK even more nervous.  I’ve never surfed a point break but I realize something after a while; when you catch a wave on a beach break, you leave everyone behind you. On a point break, you catch a wave and everyone is in front of you!  I either felt I was “in the way”, or like I might kill someone (accidentally, of course).  It’s a very difficult situation. Did I mention that my arms feel like cement clubs?  The paddle out is a killer. I can’t stress that enough. It’s 450 meters to get where you need to be.  Not to mention the current or the tide.  The upside to that is that when you catch a wave, it goes just as long. I have never seen anyone ride a wave for as long as here.  At this point, I have yet to do so myself! I almost caught a couple, but couldn’t paddle fast enough to get into it.  You know, all the excuses I can think of…but I feel pretty confident that my time will come soon.
